How to Maintain Your Chainsaw

If you want to use a chain saw effectively and safely, you'll need to keep it well-maintained. In addition to ensuring your safety, maintaining your chain saw will help it last as long as possible. Keeping your chainsaw in excellent working order is easy if you follow these simple steps.

1. Keep it clean

The more frequently you use your chainsaw, the more debris it will collect, ranging from sawdust and tree sap to globs of oil. If you want it to continue operating at peak efficiency, you need to clean it. However, each item requires a somewhat different cleaning approach, so be prepared to clean each one independently.

2. Sharpen the blades

A dull chainsaw will not suffice. That is why routine chainsaw maintenance includes blade sharpening. If you're unsure whether your blades need to be sharpened, keep an eye on how your chainsaw has been performing recently. If it frequently discharges sawdust rather than saw chips, the blades may need to be sharpened. Additionally, if it seems as though it jumps when used, the blades may be too blunt.

3. Lubricate

To avoid friction between the guide bar and the chain, keep your chainsaw properly oiled. If there is insufficient oil, the chain will not revolve as quickly as it should, and the tool will overheat.

4. Use new gas

Unless you regularly use your chainsaw, the gas in it may have degraded since the last time you used it. During storage, the gas in it can begin to degrade in as little as a month, clogging the carburetor and finally causing it to fail to operate properly. As a result, you should only put in roughly 30 days' worth of gas. Alternatively, you may apply a gasoline additive to maintain the freshness of the gas for months at a time.
