A plate compactor is a vital piece of construction equipment used to compact soil and gravel. Plate compactors are used to flatten earth before paving.

HOW THEY WORK

When a plate compactor is in operation, the heavy plate at the bottom of the machine rapidly slides up and down. Rapid hits, plate weight, and impact all combine to compact or pack the earth beneath more tightly. Plate compactors work best on granular soils, such as those with a high sand or gravel content. In some circumstances, moistening the soil prior to utilizing the plate compactor is useful. Two to four passes over the dirt should normally suffice, but the compactor manufacturer or rental firm should be able to provide guidance on a case-by-case basis.
