Top Tips for Using Hand Tools and Power Tools Safely

It's a well-known fact that construction sites present several risks. With so many possible causes of injury and fatalities, safety must always take first. However, operating safely with hand and power tools is not often well discussed. The following are some safety recommendations for using hand and power tools. While many of these are straightforward, it never hurts to brush up on safety best practices.

  • At all occasions, use the proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Utilise the appropriate tool for the task. It is not recommended to improvise and use any hand tool for a purpose for which it was not meant.

  • Wearing loose clothing or jewellery that might get entangled in the moving components of power equipment is not recommended.

  • Properly handle tools. Carry them safely and store them in an appropriate tool belt or tool box.

  • Before each usage, properly inspect all power and hand tools. Examine for missing components (including safety components), loose handles, and other evidence of damage. Using any tool that does not look to be in perfect functioning condition is not recommended.

  • When not in use or doing adjustments, unplug electric power tools.

  • In wet conditions, avoid utilising electric power tools.

  • Avoid modifying tools, such as removing guards or other safety components or disabling safety features.

  • Hand tools should never be left unattended on raised surfaces. Working at height with a hand tool necessitates watching out for anybody below you in the event that it falls.

  • Maintain a neat and orderly workspace. Tripping over a power tool or a hand tool while using or transporting one is hazardous. Ensure that all electrical wires and air lines are out of the way.

  • When working with hand tools or using power equipment, keep a safe distance from other persons and objects.
